After feeling pressure from community, Microsoft announced the Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows Desktop. Planned for release in the fall, Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows Desktop will allow hobbyists, beginners and open-source coders to create desktop and command-line applications for free.
Previously, Microsoft had wanted to push developers on to $400 Visual Studio 2012 (formerly Visual Studio 11) Professional edition to create desktop and command line apps.
