Facebook Acquires Face.com, Facial Recognition Technology company

Face.com logo

Facebook has acquired facial recognition company Face.com.

According to a blog post on their site.

Facebook has acquired Face.com! Our mission is and has always been to find new and exciting ways to make face recognition a fun, engaging part of people’s lives, and incorporate remarkable technology into everyday consumer products. If you’re anything like us, Facebook is a part of your life every single day.  We keep up with our friends and family, share interesting (or mundane) experiences from our daily lives, and perhaps most importantly for us, we share a LOT of photos.

We love building products, and like our friends at Facebook, we think that mobile is a critical part of people’s lives as they both create and consume content, and share contentwith their social graph. By working with Facebook directly, and joining their team, we’ll have more opportunities to build amazing products that will be employed by consumers – that’s all we’ve ever wanted to do.  :)

Now, lots of developers use Face.com technology to power various apps and make wonderful products.  We love you guys, and the plan is to continue to support our developer community.  If there are new developments you can expect to hear from us here, on the developer blog, and through our developer newsletter.

Thank you to all of our supporters, our amazing dev community, to our employees and to our friends and family who have seen us through many long days and longer nights. The next steps are going to be exciting for all of us.

iPhone Dev-Team announces a baseband downgrade option for iPhone 3GS, 3G

redsn0w 0.9.14b1

The iPhone Dev-Team has announced a baseband downgrade option in RedSn0w 0.9.14b1 for those who are using the iPad’s 06.15 baseband on the iPhone3G or iPhone3GS.

Typically you'd have the 06.15 baseband if you unlock with ultrasn0w but updated your iPhone baseband past 05.13.04. With this new capability, you can now downgrade specifically from 06.15 to 05.13.04 (even if you never had 05.13.04 on that device before). This gives you the best of both worlds: ultrasn0w compatibility and a normal iPhone baseband with full GPS and the ability to use stock IPSWs again.

Steps:
1. Use the "Extras->Select IPSW" button in redsn0w to tell it which firmware version you have installed (new-bootrom 3GS users can usually skip this step but it doesn't hurt for them to do it too).
2. Do a controlled shutdown of your iPhone ("slide to power off"). This step is very important to avoid mount problems when the ramdisk is running!
3. Go back to the first screen and click "Jailbreak". Enable the "Downgrade from iPad baseband" checkbox, disable Cydia if you already have it installed, and click Next proceed through the normal DFU ramdisk steps.

Note: The "Flashing Baseband" step TAKES A VERY LONG TIME to complete (3-8 minutes).

For those who are wondering if you can update your 3G or 3GS to 06.15 solely for the purposes of downgrading to 05.13.04, the answer is "yes" for 3G owners, and "maybe" for 3GS owners. The iPad baseband is not compatible with 3GS units manufactured week 34 of 2011 or later. If you have an iPhone3GS and if digits 3-5 of its Serial Number are 134 or later (xx134…), then you should NOT try to install the 06.15 baseband on your 3GS! It will brick your radio, preventing both the downgrade from working and normal iPhone software from using it as a phone! Be warned!

Samsung intros Galaxy S III Enterprise Friendly version in the US

Samsung Galaxy S III SAFE

Samsung Mobile is simplifying enterprise adoption with the introduction of SAFE (Samsung Approved for Enterprise) and the first SAFE-branded smartphone in the United States, the Galaxy S III, which will be available at AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular by July. To aid prosumers and corporations in accessing the most innovative smartphone on the market, Samsung is also introducing SAFE2SWITCH, a trade-up program that offers competitive pricing for qualifying smartphones for both individuals and enterprise customers.

SAFE – Optimized for the Enterprise

SAFE provides a comprehensive approach to making Android devices secure and manageable by systematically meeting the rapidly evolving needs of IT and the growing number of businesses allowing employees to "bring your own device" (BYOD) to work. Samsung created SAFE as a way to defragment the Android OS across multiple versions from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich at U.S. carriers. Out of the box, the SAFE-branded Galaxy S III supports a full suite of enterprise-ready features and capabilities with support for 338 IT Policies. This includes on-device AES-256 bit encryption, enhanced support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and support for industry-leading Virtual Private Network (VPN) and Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions.

Over the last 12 months, Samsung has surpassed its next nearest handset and smartphone competitors to become No. 1 globally and now has its sights set on the enterprise. Working closely with enterprise customers and industry-leading solutions providers, Samsung developed a thorough quality assurance program. This program begins with MDM and VPN solutions providers using Samsung's software development kit to deeply integrate their solution on the SAFE device. Once the development effort is completed, Samsung and the solution provider then thoroughly test and verify the device's support for the MDM and/or VPN software. This collaboration, coupled with the testing process, creates solutions that are optimized for SAFE devices and enterprise use including adoption within regulated industries such as healthcare, financial services and government.

Galaxy S III – Powerful, Collaborative, Secure

The Galaxy S III offers secure features and capabilities that may be used in a wide range of business situations to improve efficiency and productivity.

  • AllShare Play - Group Cast: Securely share PowerPoint presentations and PDFs with business partners also using Galaxy S III devices
  • Share Shot: Quickly and easily compile and share photos with colleagues and contacts
  • S Beam One Touch Sharing (NFC and Wi-Fi Direct): Quickly exchange contact and meeting information or company documents by simply tapping phones together. S Beam can also be controlled via an MDM solution.
  • Intelligent Display and Motion: Focus on the job at hand with intuitive features like Direct Call and Smart Stay
  • HD Super AMOLED Display: Review detailed plans or blueprints with brilliant 4.8" HD Super AMOLED display on second-generation rugged Corning Gorilla Glass
  • Samsung TecTiles: NFC programmable tags and mobile application transform how businesses, both large and small, engage their customers

SAFE2SWITCH Prosumer / Enterprise Trade-In Program

With the launch of the SAFE-branded Galaxy S III, Samsung is announcing the availability of a trade-up program called SAFE2SWITCH which simplifies the transition to Samsung SAFE devices from Samsung or other manufacturers' smartphones. Both prosumers and corporate customers alike can take advantage of this program which offers very competitive trade-in values in real-time from their existing smartphone or Internet-connected device. Nokia believes that this is the best option for the next step in Vertu's journey of delivering excellence, enabling the brand to focus on increased opportunities for growth in the luxury category.

"With its strong brand, undisputed category leadership and attractive growth outlook, Vertu fits well with EQT VI's investment strategy. EQT VI is excited about the opportunity to develop Vertu as a standalone company and plans to drive the development of the luxury mobile phone category through significant investments in retail expansion, marketing and product development," said Jan Ståhlberg, Partner at EQT Partners, Investment Advisor to EQT VI.

Having delivered double digit sales growth over the past few years, Vertu continues to lead its class with a portfolio of high end mobile phones, increasingly led by its smartphones and tailored services, offering unique access, experiences and opportunities to a discerning and growing customer base.

"This is a logical next step in the evolution of Vertu as the world leader in luxury mobile products," said Perry Oosting, President of Vertu. "Since Vertu began in 1998, our business has grown every year, due to the efforts of our talented workforce and the unique products and services we offer to our customers. We believe that EQT VI will position Vertu to continue to grow and lead in our marketplace."

Giveaway- Get UseNeXT Premium Account Free

usenext01

Last time, we gave away Binverse Usenet premium account, and this time we’re giving away 5 UseNeXT "premium-prepaid" accounts worth around €90 or $120 (thanks to Michael of UseNeXT) which you normally can’t buy on their site and these accounts only expire if no download volume left. Sounds great!! isn’t it? But before we jumped on UseNeXT giveaway, here are few things you need to know about UseNeXT.

UseNeXT is the largest European Usenet Provider, which gives you unlimited access to the fantastic world of Usenet where you fully exploit your internet connection and download files at maximum speed and this high download speed is secured via eight server farms operated in the US and Europe.

Files remain on the servers for 976 days, whereas the retention time for messages is 1,000 days. As far as security point of view they use 256-bit SSL encryption.

To get started with UseNeXT, you need their Newsreader "Tangysoft", enter your credentials and you’re ready to "rock n roll".

If you first look at interface – its decent and easy to use, gives you one click access to newsgroups, FreeZone (where you can find free Usenet content provided by the UseNeXT and you can access this content for FREE, no traffic volume will be charged), Search, transfer list (files you’re downloading), wizard, files, chat and setting. At the bottom, you’ll find information about your download speed, data size, time left, and account storage. You can even choose server from Atimto Usenet Index, NFONews.com, NBZmatrix and ngindex. usenext_servers_setting

If you’re looking for any file just search-> select your file and start downloading at full speed without waiting. The only problem I’ve have faced while trying this software is that transfer list is showing files of size 1.8GB and on download size (at bottom) 4GB. And the answer I got from UseNeXT support is usenext download

There could be two reasons for this problem:

1. Every download has so called PAR2 Files attached to repair the file if there was a problem with the download. These files are normally not bigger than a few MB. And sometimes there are some “Preview Files” attached where you could see the first minutes of a movie or something.

2. The second explanation could be what I told you before. You maybe have any other files in the “Transfer List” and those files are added to the “To-Download-Status”.

Next time when I opened the UseNeXT, I was able to see my remaining download list. This problem occur only once to me and it doesn’t mean that you also face the same problem or other and just in case you have, you can contact their support staff.

If you’re interested you can try their service as they provide 14 days trial and 300GB download (but make sure you cancel your account within 14 days otherwise you’ll be charged.) But, if you win here you don’t have to put in your details and don’t have to pay anything. So are you ready?
