Motorola Sold Refurbished XOOM Tablet without deleting previous owners data

XOOM Wi-Fi tablet

Motorola says some of its refurbished XOOM Wi-Fi tablets have been sold without clearing the previous owners' data. Although, company’s claiming that they made the mistake only on few number of slates (approximately 100 out of a batch of 6,200) which were sold by Woot.com between October and December 2011. Motorola is offering two-year membership of Experian’s ProtectMyID Alert to those whose info was exposed and requesting owners of affected XOOM to send the device back to Motorola -- where it'll be properly reset and sent back to you, along with a $100 American Express gift card for your efforts. Just hit the break for full press release.

Motorola Mobility Notifies Certain Purchasers of Refurbished Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi Tablets of Refurbishment Process Error

Motorola announced that it has recently learned that approximately 100 out of a batch of 6,200 Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi tablets that were refurbished by Motorola Mobility may not have been completely cleared of the original owner’s data prior to resale. The affected tablets were resold by Woot.com between October and December 2011. While this matter likely affects only a small number of refurbished units, Motorola has a strong commitment to its consumers, and is proactively responding to mitigate any risk to its customers. Motorola has confirmed that any refurbished units sold outside the time period in question were properly refurbished.

The information that may be accessible to the purchasers of the impacted refurbished tablets may include any information that the original user elected to store on the tablet. It is possible that users might have stored photographs and documents. They may have also stored user names and passwords for email and social media accounts, as well as other password-protected sites and applications.

Motorola is offering customers who purchased and then returned a Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi tablet to Amazon.com, Best Buy, BJ’s Wholesale, eBay, Office Max, Radio Shack, Sam’s Club, or Staples and a few other independent retailers between March and October 2011 a complimentary two-year membership of Experian’s ProtectMyID Alert to mitigate any risks. Original owners are advised to contact Experian at 1-866-926-9803 to sign up for the credit monitoring service. These original owners are also advised to take precautionary measures to protect their identity, such as changing their email and social media passwords. Original owners who performed a factory data reset prior to returning the device are not impacted.

In conjunction with today’s announcement, Motorola is also actively pursuing the return of the impacted refurbished units to ensure that the memory of each device is cleared. Customers who purchased a refurbished Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi tablet from Woot.com between October and December 2011 are encouraged to visit motorola.com/xoomreturn or to call Motorola Mobility Customer Support at 1-800-734-5870, select Option 1, in order to determine if their tablet is affected.

Motorola Acquires Aloqa GmbH

Press Release

Motorola Logo

On 16 September 2010 Motorola acquired Aloqa GmbH, a privately-held, leading developer of location-based software and technologies that are designed to enable the discovery of relevant web content by mobile smartphone users. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Aloqa has joined Motorola Mobility, which is comprised of Motorola’s Mobile Devices and Home businesses. Motorola Mobility is expected to be spun off from Motorola, Inc. in the first quarter of 2011.

Aloqa’s technologies and services utilize the user’s context (location, identity and social relationships) to proactively inform them of places, events, bargains and other opportunities of which they may choose to take advantage.  For example, if Aloqa’s software recognizes the user is in a certain region, it will offer him the top events of the day or special offers of leading discounters in the vicinity.  Aloqa distributes its product as a mobile application for smartphone platforms, including Android, and more than one million users have already downloaded its software.

Aloqa will further enhance Motorola’s MOTOBLUR, which delivers customized content to mobile device homescreens and allows users to access Facebook, MySpace and Twitter updates -- along with emails, news and favorite apps and widgets -- all in one place.  MOTOBLUR will integrate Aloqa’s open, location-triggered mobile push platform to connect users and publishers of location-aware content in real-time.

“Aloqa is an exciting addition to Motorola Mobility as its specialized engineering talent and location-tracking technology will significantly accelerate the release of our context-aware mobile services platform,” said Christy Wyatt, corporate vice president of software and services product management for Motorola Mobility.  “Aloqa’s core technologies, user database, and specialized skills are a strong fit with our planned server-side context delivery architecture and will further enhance Motorola’s MOTOBLUR capabilities.  We welcome Aloqa’s highly skilled personnel to the Motorola Mobility team.”

"We are proud that a global mobile giant like Motorola chose the Aloqa platform as a core part of its future in location technologies. Like every startup, we have always dreamed of our technology and product being used by tens of millions of satisfied users everywhere. Being a part of the Motorola Mobility team will help us achieve this goal," said Sanjeev Agrawal, chief executive officer of Aloqa.

The Motorola RAZR Developer Edition ships with no warranty (seriously, not for everyone) and features the same specs as of Motorola RAZR. We seriously don’t understand what’s the need of selling smartphone with same specs, better if Motorola provides a tool like HTC to unlock bootloader for existing Motorola RAZR customers but anyways if you’re interested checkout the links below.

Motorola introduced NYXgreen and NYXBoard

Press Release

Motorola Introduces New Range of IPTV Accessory Products at IBC 2010

New additions provide style, environmental efficiency and innovative tools to navigate the Internet Era of TV

NYXBoard

AMSTERDAM – IBC 2010 – September 10, 2010 – Motorola, Inc. introduced the latest accessories for its industry-leading IPTV set-tops. Meeting the demands of today's connected TV experience; the range of remote control units (RCU) are on show at this year's IBC (Motorola stand, Hall 1 F30).

NYXgreen: The NYXgreen and dock is Motorola's environmentally friendly RCU option. Eliminating traditional batteries, the RCU is powered by super capacitors, which can last for up to two weeks of use after charging via USB for just 60 seconds. Available by the end of 2010, this unit is particularly well suited to the hotel environment where maintaining batteries proves costly and inefficient. Looking forward, Motorola is collaborating with the Ångström Laboratory of Uppsala University on an innovative algae battery.

YXboard: The NYXboard combines the traditional remote control form with a full keyboard to create a more intuitive navigational experience for sophisticated interactive TV services as well as traditional linear TV. Able to control both the set-top and television set, the NYXboard has sensors to recognise which side of the remote is being used in order to activate the buttons accordingly. The keyboard function answers the demands of navigating content in the Internet Era of TV, such as searching through larger and more complex on-demand libraries or accessing web content on the TV. NYXboard will be available by the end of 2010

M-TREM and MRCU180-BL: Also on show at IBC is the high quality mid-range M-TREM and the MRCU180-BL, which adds backlighting to the buttons on this already popular unit. Both the M-TREM and MRCU180-BL are available to ship today.

"Motorola's latest RCUs are the perfect accessories for the Internet Era of TV, where consumers must find relevant content in the infinite catalog of entertainment. Whether they want a device boasting style, innovation or environmental efficiency, Motorola has a solution to meet their needs" commented Keith Kelley, vice president and general manager EMEA & Asia Pacific consumer premise equipment, Motorola Mobility.
