Today at its developer-focused BUILD conference, Microsoft  showcased a detailed preview of the next major release of Windows, code-named “Windows 8.”

New Features in Windows 8:-

Touch-First User Interface

• Metro style. Windows 8 introduces a new Metro style interface built for touch, which shows information important to you, embodies simplicity and gives you control. The Metro style UI is equally at home with a mouse and keyboard as well.

Three Edition of Windows 8 - Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 RT

Microsoft has announced that its next operating system will officially be called 'Windows 8' and will have just three editions: Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 RT.

According to a post on the Windows blog, x86 / 64 devices will get Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro while ARM devices will run Windows RT.

Windows 8 has been Released to Manufacturing (RTM)

Microsoft today has confirmed that Windows 8 has been released to manufacturing (RTM) which means company completed the product development and testing of the product and have started handing off the final code to OEM partners.

Here are the details:

• August 15th: Developers will be able to download the final version of Windows 8 via your MSDN subscriptions.
• August 15th: IT professionals testing Windows 8 in organizations will be able to access the final version of Windows 8 through your TechNet subscriptions.
• August 16th: Customers with existing Microsoft Software Assurance for Windows will be able to download Windows 8 Enterprise edition through the Volume License Service Center (VLSC), allowing you to test, pilot and begin adopting Windows 8 Enterprise within your organization.
• August 16th: Microsoft Partner Network members will have access to Windows 8.
• August 20th: Microsoft Action Pack Providers (MAPS) receive access to Windows 8.
• September 1st: Volume License customers without Software Assurance will be able to purchase Windows 8 through Microsoft Volume License Resellers.

Windows 8 Packaging and Pricing Revealed

Microsoft has revealed the packaging for Windows 8 Pro, which will come in five different versions, each with its own unique and vibrant illustration.

The online retailer Newegg opened up its pre-orders revealing the price for various versions of Windows 8. Take a look:

• Windows 8 Professional Upgrade – $69
• Windows 8 Pro Pack – $69, product key card only
• Windows 8 OEM -$99 (32 or 64 bit)
• Windows 8 Professional – $139 (32 or 64 bit)

However, if you want to wait until October 26th you will be able to upgrade online for just $39.99 USD. Anyone who purchase (or have purchased) a Windows 7 PC anytime in between June 2, 2012 and January 13, 2013 will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for only $14.99 USD.

The Official Windows 8 Logo "It's a window… not a flag"

Microsoft is making lots of changes with its Windows 8 operating system and that's now extended to a new logo as Principal Director of User Experience for Windows, Sam Moreau revealed a new Metro UI based Windows 8 logo It’s a window… not a flag.

Sam Moreau writes about the thinking behind the design on the Windows Team Blog:

With Windows 8, we approached the logo redesign with a few key goals on mind.

1. We wanted the new logo to be both modern and classic by echoing the International Typographic Style (or Swiss design) that has been a great influence on our Metro style design philosophy. Using bold flat colors and clean lines and shapes, the new logo has the characteristics of way-finding design systems seen in airports and subways.

2. It was important that the new logo carries our Metro principle of being “Authentically Digital”. By that, we mean it does not try to emulate faux-industrial design characteristics such as materiality (glass, wood, plastic, etc.). It has motion – aligning with the fast and fluid style you’ll find throughout Windows 8.

3. Our final goal was for the new logo to be humble, yet confident. Welcoming you in with a slight tilt in perspective and when you change your color, the logo changes to reflect you. It is a “Personal” Computer after all.

Windows 8 to be available by "the end of October"

Today in Toronto, Windows Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Financial Officer Tami Reller, at Microsoft’s annual Worldwide Partner Conference confirmed that Windows 8 is on track to Release to Manufacturing (RTM) the first week of August.

Tami also announced that the Windows 8 will reach general availability by the end of October and will be available in 109 languages across 231 markets worldwide.

Back in June, Microsoft revealed its Windows Upgrade Offer under which customers who purchase Windows 7 PCs between June 2, 2012 and January 31, 2013 can purchase an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $15. And last week company announced that Windows 7, Vista or XP owners can get Windows 8 upgrade for $40.

Samsung announced its brand-new ATIV devices based on the Windows 8 for Smart PCs, tablets and Windows Phone 8 for smartphones - ATIV Smart PC, ATIV Smart PC Pro, ATIV Tab, and ATIV S

Samsung ATIV Smart PC & Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro

The 11.6-inch Samsung ATIV Smart PC and ATIV Smart PC Pro provide computing power with Windows 8 functionality as well as full Windows 7 compatibility. Each device features a detachable keyboard-docking system that allows users to easily switch between a clamshell notebook PC and a tablet PC form factor. These devices allow for great mobility with maximum productivity.

In addition to commonly-provided input methods, the ATIV Smart PC and ATIV Smart PC Pro are equipped with the renowned S Pen, delivering real writing and drawing experiences for maximum productivity, both on the desk and on-the-go. Just like using a pen or pencil, the Wacom digitizer pen is capable of meeting the demands of professional designers with its 1024-level pressure sensitivity. The pre-loaded S Note application accompanies the S Pen to make writing and drawing as simple and intuitive as possible.

While the S Camera fully exploits the performance of the integrated front and rear cameras, the S Player ensures seamless playback of images and videos in any format. This content is presented with Samsung’s SuperBright 11.6-inch Full HD LCD display, producing the most vivid colors and sharpness with 400nit brightness.

Beautifully stylish and ultra-portable, the ATIV Smart PC and ATIV Smart PC Pro are only 9.9mm and 11.9mm thick, respectively; and there are no compromises on performance. The ATIV Smart PC Pro’s powerful Intel Core i5 processor can handle particularly demanding professional use and multimedia consumption; while the ATIV Smart PC’s next generation Intel Atom processor is a solid match for everyday productivity tasks.

Despite their compact and portable form factor, the two devices feature USB 2.0(Smart PC), USB 3.0(Smart PC Pro), mHDMI, miniSD and two extra USB 2.0 ports on the keyboard. To get the experience going, the ATIV Smart PC has a battery life of up to 13.5 hours, whereas its stronger sister device, the ATIV Smart PC Pro, runs up to eight hours.

Microsoft Windows 8 Release Preview available for Download

Microsoft Windows 8 Release Preview, the next milestone of the highly anticipated Windows 8 operating system is available for download in 14 languages at http://preview.windows.com.

Microsoft announced that the beginning June 2, 2012, it will roll out the Windows Upgrade Offer in 131 markets, including the U.S. and Canada. Consumers who buy eligible Windows 7-based PCs through January 31st, 2013, can purchase an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for an estimated retail price of $14.99 (U.S.) during the time of the promotion.
