Plextor announces External DVD Burner for TVs, No PC required

Plextor announces the release of its latest External Slim DVD/CD Writer, PX-612U, with PlexTV at the CES 2012. PlexTV is a new feature enabling Plextor's DVD/CD drive to work with televisions, media players, and other USB-enabled devices. The external drive connects directly to the desired display via USB cable and the user is able to access information stored on a CD or DVD without a PC. PlexTV will be available exclusively with the PX-612U during the first quarter of 2012.

Currently, HDTVs are compatible with a wide variety of devices via USB connection, including hard drives, cameras, and flash drives, but they do not support optical disk drives built for computers. PlexTV enables the use of Plextor's PX-612U drive with these previously unsupported devices by translating signal output to mimic a hard drive.

LG's Smart TVs and Blu-ray players will get Verizon FiOS TV app

The latest app from Verizon is the FiOS TV App, will be coming to LG's Smart TV Platform in the first half of 2012. The new app will allow Verizon FiOS TV subscribers to access 26 live HD channels directly through their connected LG Smart TV or Blu-ray Player without any additional hardware required. You will also have access to more than 10,000 video on-demand titles available through Flex View – Verizon's at home or away from home on-demand entertainment service for TVs, PCs, tablets and smartphones.

Acer announces 13.3-inch Acer Aspire S5 Ultrabook, ships in Q2 2012

Acer unveiled the world's thinnest Ultrabook with the Aspire S5, an ultra-slim device that measures only 15 mm at the maximal point. It weighs less than 1.35 kg (less than 3 lbs.) and is built with a 13.3-inch (34 cm) LCD. In addition, it features the unique Acer Green Instant On technology for fast boot and resume, and Acer Always Connect, which lets users manage their multimedia and data on all their devices at anytime, anywhere - even from sleep.

The Aspire S5 features an Intel Core processor, SSD storage for speed and increased shock resistance, professionally-tuned Dolby Home Theater v4, long battery life via the PowerSmart battery pack (with a 3X longer life cycle than traditional batteries), and is equipped with a chiclet keyboard. This 13.3 incher also offers a magnesium-aluminum alloy cover,  MagicFlip I/O port panel concealed just below the hinge includes HDMI, USB 3.0 and 20 Gbps Thunderbolt.

The Aspire S5 will start shipping in Q2 2012.

OnLive Streaming Games coming to Google TV

The OnLive Viewer, enabling OnLive social features, is available immediately on all Google TV devices currently in the market and is compatible with standard Google TV remote controls as well as the OnLive Wireless Controller and standard USB game controllers.

Full OnLive gameplay is coming soon to all current and future Google TV devices, including TVs, Blu-ray players and Media Streamers, making Google TV the first integrated TV platform with console-class gameplay capability, and bringing OnLive capability to most major TV manufacturers.

Lenovo K800 Smartphone based on Intel Atom Processor available in Q2 2012 via China Unicom

Intel and Lenovo announced that the Lenovo K800 smartphone based on Intel Atom processor Z2460, (formerly "Medfield,") with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, support for HSPA+ and running the Android platform will be available in China in the second quarter and will run on China Unicom network.

Lenovo K800 smartphone features sleek packaging, a 4.03-inch high-resolution LCD touch screen for crisp text and vibrant images, and two cameras delivering advanced imaging capabilities, including burst mode that allows individuals to capture 15 pictures in less than a second with 8-megapixel quality.

INTERNATIONAL CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW, Las Vegas, Jan. 10, 2012 – Intel Corporation today announced a number of advancements across its smartphone business, including a multi-year, multi-device strategic relationship with Motorola Mobility*, Inc. and a handset by Lenovo* based on the company’s new Intel® Atom™ processor platform. Several smartphones based on the new Atom processor are expected to come to market in 2012.

“The best of Intel computing is coming to smartphones,” said Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini. “Our efforts with Lenovo and Motorola Mobility will help to establish Intel processors in smartphones and provide a solid foundation from which to build in 2012 and into the future.”

Otellini made the announcements during a keynote address at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show. He also detailed Ultrabook™ category momentum and described how the company is innovating to deliver superior experiences across a range of mobile devices.

Intel CEO highlighted the Intel® Atom™ processor Z2460 platform, formerly “Medfield,” which was specifically designed for smartphones and tablets, and delivers leading performance with competitive, energy efficiency.

Sanjay Jha, chairman and CEO of Motorola Mobility, joined Otellini onstage and the two executives detailed their companies’ multi-year, multi-device strategic relationship. The effort includes smartphones that Motorola will begin to ship in the second half of this year using Intel Atom processors and the Android* platform. The collaboration, which also covers tablets, combines Intel’s leadership in silicon technology and computing innovation with Motorola’s mobile device design expertise.

Liu Jun, Lenovo senior vice president and president of Mobile Internet and Digital Home, also joined Otellini onstage to debut the Lenovo K800*smartphone based on Intel technology and running the Android* platform. Liu Jun said the K800 smartphone will be available in China in the second quarter and will run on China Unicom’s 21Mbs network. The smartphone features the low-power Intel® Atom™ processor Z2460 with Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology, support for HSPA+ with the Intel® XMM™ 6260 Platform, and the Lenovo LeOS user interface for a localized experience in China.

Otellini said enabling the best mobile experience is a priority for Intel. Michael Bell, general manager of Intel’s Mobile and Communications Group, also joined Otellini onstage to demonstrate the Intel® Smartphone Reference Design that aims to shrink device development time and costs for phone OEMs and carriers. This fully functioning smartphone features sleek packaging, a 4.03-inch high-resolution LCD touch screen for crisp text and vibrant images, and two cameras delivering advanced imaging capabilities, including burst mode that allows individuals to capture 15 pictures in less than a second with 8-megapixel quality.

Showcasing the popular Angry Birds* application on the phone, Bell pointed to broad Android* applications support that allows Intel technology-based smartphones to run the vast majority of Android* applications, including those compiled for other architectures.

Otellini said Intel will raise the bar on tablet experiences by offering compatibility with the millions of existing applications and devices; an instant-on, software and apps experience; and support of the Metro* user interface. Onstage was the world’s first public demonstration of the forthcoming 32nm Intel Atom SoC for tablets and hybrids running on Microsoft* Windows* 8, codenamed “Clover Trail.”

Ultrabook to Completely Redefine PCs
Intel is leading the industry to re-invent personal computing again with the creation of the new category of Ultrabook devices, delivering a no-compromise computing experience in thin and elegant designs.

In just eight months, and built on a foundation of broad consumer appeal and ecosystem support, the category has gained strong momentum with a total of more than 75 ultra sleek, ultra responsive and secure Ultrabook systems expected to ship this year from industry partners.

Jeff Clarke, vice chairman of Global Operations and End User Computing Solutions at Dell*, joined Otellini onstage to announce the company’s first Ultrabook, the new XPS 13* powered by the Intel® Core™ i7 processor. Scheduled for February availability, the sleek and stylish design weighs only 2.99 lbs and provides up to 8 hours of battery life.

Intel is committed to the continued rapid improvement in user experience. The company’s engineers will further accelerate Ultrabook innovation in 2012 with 3rd generation Intel Core processors, codenamed “Ivy Bridge,” with the help of Intel’s revolutionary 22nm 3-D Tri-gate transistors.

This next generation of devices will expand the computing experience beyond anything realized today. Two Ultrabook concept designs powered by “Ivy Bridge” were demonstrated during the keynote speech.

Intel’s CEO promised that these devices will be more secure and eliminate the discussion on trade-offs for computing, like form factor, user interface or performance. He also said Ultrabooks will offer a flagship platform for a premium, no-compromise environment that helps deliver on the Microsoft* Windows* 8 promise of re-imagining Windows.

Applications specifically suited for the Ultrabook are available from the Intel AppUpSM center, a one-stop shop for the latest PC apps. Intel announced a strategic relationship between Intel and Technicolor* surrounding M-GO, an app powered by Intel AppUp that will bring high-definition, premium digital content for television, movies, music and apps to Ultrabook devices and other Intel-based devices with Intel® Insider™ in the second quarter of 2012. M-GO will provide movies and TV shows from major Hollywood studios and help manage HD premium content across multiple devices and platforms via a single intuitive, secure user interface.

Motorola Mobility to Begin Shipping Intel-Based Smartphone in 2H 2012

Intel Corporation and Motorola Mobility announced that the two companies were entering into a multi-year, multi-device strategic relationship that includes smartphones which Motorola will begin shipping later this year using Intel Atom processors and the Android platform.

The collaboration, which also covers tablets, will combine Intel's leadership in silicon processor technology and computing innovation with Motorola's mobile device design expertise to deliver products that have the high performance, long battery life and convenience necessary for increasingly mobile lifestyles.

Samsung Notebook Series 9 Unveiled

Samsung unveiled the second generation of the Samsung Notebook Series 9 at the International CES in Las Vegas. The new Samsung Series 9 offers the world’s thinnest and most compact 15-inch premium notebook, featuring a vivid 15-inch display fitted into a stylish 14-inch chassis. The truly flat 14.9mm (0.58 inch) thin design weighing just 1.59kg (3.5 lbs) makes the 15-inch Series 9 almost 50 percent more compact than any existing 15-inch thin and light notebooks. The 13-inch Series 9 measures only 12.9mm (0.5 inch) and weighs just 1.16kg (2.5 lbs) – even 28 percent smaller than its previous model.

The new Series 9 features a 180 percent brighter HD+ SuperBright Plus screen with anti-reflective display,  a 2nd generation Intel Core i5/i7 processor, 4GB*/8GB memory and 128GB/256GB SSD. It boots in 9.8 seconds, Fast Start ensures a 1.4-second wake-up while Fast Browsing provides a 2-times faster web browsing. Another surprising innovation, the new 15-inch Series 9’s battery lasts up to 10 hours. 

 

Lenovo unveils Classmate+ Laptops

Lenovo announced today its Intel Atom N2600 processor powered, Classmate+ laptops – in both traditional clamshell and convertible laptop form factors. They come with a 10.1-inch anti-glare screen with touch capability on the convertible as well as optional high-brightness or high-definition on both or a capacitive touch screen with a pen on the convertible. These laptops packed up to 2 GB DDR3 memory and up to 320 GB hard drive or up to 32 GB solid state drive storage and has 6-cell battery which will last up to 10 hours. They also feature three USB ports, VGA and an optional HDMI port for transferring data and displaying standard and high definition video to a monitor or TV. They also come with a web camera in resolutions up to 2 megapixels.

While the Classmate+ laptops come in a standard Grey color, customs colors are available with a minimum quantity order. Additionally, the Lenovo Classmate+ Convertible has an exclusive rotating hinge strengthened and designed to last tens of thousands of cycles. It also has a built-in hardware button to make scrolling through ebooks simple and an optional Trusted Platform Module to protect data like passwords and digital certificates from external software attacks and physical theft.

The Lenovo Classmate+ laptop and Convertible laptop will be available starting in January to qualified education and government customers through Lenovo sales representatives and business partners. The price of the Lenovo Classmate+ laptop and Convertible laptop will vary in each market based on regional taxes, tariffs and configuration options

Leader International unveils cheap Android 4.0 Impression 10A and 7A tablets

Little known, Leader International announced 9.7-inch Impression 10A (I10A) and 7-inch Impression 7A (I7A) tablets running Android 4.0.

Equipped with a powerful 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core ARM Cortex A9, the I10A runs Android 4.0 with Flash 10.3, and its 9.7-inch capacitive (5-point) widescreen IPS display delivers brilliant color, 1024x768 resolution and wide viewing angles. The I10A features 2.0MP front and back cameras and includes the Fring videoconference app.

The I7A features a 1GHz processor and 512MB RAM, and runs Android 4.0 with Adobe Flash 10.3. The tablet's seven-inch capacitive WSVGA display offers a 178-degree viewing angle and delivers 1024x600 resolution. Other features include a micro SD card slot with 16GB capacity and a mini HDMI port.

Qualcomm to demonstrate pre-release Windows 8 on Snapdragon S4 processors with LTE connectivity support

Qualcomm today announced at the 2012 International CES show that it is collaborating with Microsoft Corp. to demonstrate pre-release Windows 8 on Snapdragon S4 processors with LTE connectivity support. Demonstrated on the AT&T 4G LTE network for the first time, Windows 8 powered by Snapdragon with LTE and 3G/4G wireless support enables the connected standby experience with lower power consumption recently demonstrated by Microsoft, and provides Windows 8-based PCs including tablets, convertibles and notebooks with wireless broadband speeds and advanced connectivity solutions to help enable fast, productive experiences for users worldwide. Demonstrations of pre-release Windows 8 on the Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 reference hardware tablet with LTE were held during Dr. Paul E. Jacobs' opening keynote address earlier today. Jacobs' keynote was part of the Technology and Evolving Countries (TEC) Program, focused on the role mobile technology plays in global innovation and economic growth in consumer electronics.

Verizon's FiOS TV Online to Launch SHOWTIME ANYTIME

Verizon's FiOS TV customers are gaining more online and mobile video content, as they are among the first to receive unlimited access to SHOWTIME ANYTIME, featuring more than 400 hours of critically acclaimed, award-winning SHOWTIME original programming, hit movies and sports offerings, available for viewing on any computer or iPad. SHOWTIME ANYTIME launched Tuesday (January 10th) free of charge for FiOS TV customers who subscribe to SHOWTIME.

Additionally, Verizon and Showtime Networks have extended their existing carriage agreement into 2017. The comprehensive, five-year agreement includes SHOWTIME, THE MOVIE CHANNEL and FLIX, the networks' multiplex and on-demand channels, as well as Smithsonian Channel, a joint venture between Showtime Networks Inc. and the Smithsonian Institution.

Sony Ericsson intros Xperia NX and Xperia acro HD for Japan

Here we’re little confused by both Sony Ericsson and Sony brand but Sony Ericsson which is soon to be Sony, brings out two new smartphones for the Japanese market Xperia acro HD and Xperia NX alongside with Xperia ion and Xperia S.

The Xperia acro HD, the follow-up to Xperia acro with popular Japan-specific features including infrared port data exchange, mobile wallet and mobile TV. It features 4.3-inch HD LCD display, a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, a 12MP rear camera with Exmor R, 1.3MP front-facing cam, supports handwriting input, a 1840mAh battery and 16GB of internal memory. It is scheduled to launch around March 2012 by NTT DoCoMo.

Xperia NX

Xperia NX, a variant of Xperia S for the Japanese market and has been scheduled for release in February 2012 by NTT DoCoMo.

Sony Launches New Network Media Player and Blu-ray Disc Player powered by Google TV

Sony today announced the launch of Network Media Player (NSZ-GS7) and Blu-ray Disc Player (NSZ-GP9) powered by Google TV, starting with North America and Europe.

Users can connect these devices to their TV via HDMI to seamlessly watch TV broadcast, enjoy apps, and browse the Internet. The new remote control is equipped with a touch pad, full keyboard with back light, microphone for voice search and game compliant 3 axis motion sensor which realizes easy and intuitive operation.

The new Network Media Player and Blu-ray Disc Player are scheduled to launch from early summer 2012, starting with North America and Europe and plan to expand into other countries and regions.

Nokia Lumia 900 now Official, coming to AT&T’s 4G LTE network

Nokia and AT&T announced the Nokia Lumia 900, the first of Nokia's Windows Phone-based range to feature high-speed LTE connectivity. Coming exclusively to AT&T in the coming months in cyan and matte black, the Nokia Lumia 900 has a 4.3-inch AMOLED ClearBlack Display (800X480), a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8055 + MDM9200 processor, a 512MB RAM,running Mango Commercial Release 2 (Mango + LTE) (Windows Phone 7.5) and has an 16GB of internal storage.  If we talk about camera, there's an 8-megapixel primary camera with a 28mm f/2.2 Carl Zeiss lens and 1-megapixel with an f2.4 lens and 30fps capture front-facing camera. There’s a 1840mAH battery which will last for about 7hrs talk-time and up to 300hrs on standby. Other features include, a Bluetooth, WiFi,  USB 2.0 high-speed, A-GPS and there's no word on pricing yet.
